Our Board of Directors and Executive Leadership Team recognises the importance of ensuring the highest standards of Safety, Health and Environment and have established the following oversight structures to ensure the business remains focused on delivering its Health, Safety & Environment Policy commitments.


Our Global Safety, Health and Environment Strategy 2020

Our Safety, Health and Environment strategy 2020, launched in October 2017, reinforces GrainCorp’s commitment to Safety, Health and Environment and sets the direction for the company in achieving its goal of zero harm. The strategy is based on five key pillars:

Safety and Health

GrainCorp is committed to providing a safe and sustainable work environment for all employees, visitors and contractors. Safety is one of our four Values, “Commit to SAFETY” which focuses on the following commitments:

  • We protect the safety and health of our employees, contractors, visitors to our sites and the community
  • We embrace a commitment to zero harm
  • We proactively manage health, safety and environment risks
  • We recognise that our individual safety, and that of our colleagues, starts with us.

Health and Safety Performance

To monitor and measure safety performance, we utilise a range of lead and lag indicators, including Lost Time Injury Frequency Rate (LTIFR) and Recordable Injury Frequency Rate (RIFR) which include data for employees, labour hire and contractors. During FY18, GrainCorp will be introducing an additional lag measure of critical incident frequency rate to track critical incident rate performance.

Our lead measures include bi - monthly line leadership reviews and significant risk reviews which review the control effectiveness of our key risks.

Definitions

RIFR (Recordable injury frequency rate) – (number of LTIs/RWIs/MTIs x 1,000,000)/number of hours worked.

LTIFR (Lost time injury frequency rate) – (number of LTIs x 1,000,000)/number of hours worked)

LTI (Lost time injury) – A work related injury that prevents an employee from returning to work for one or more calendar days.

RWI (Restricted work injury) – A work related injury that results in medical work restrictions that keeps an employee from performing one or more of their routine functions.

MTI (Medical treatment injury) – A work related injury that requires ‘medical treatment’ beyond first aid but does not require restricted or lost work days

Environment & Sustainability

We recognise the importance of sound environmental management practices and the importance of utilising resources responsibly. Our approach to environmental management is underpinned by the identification, assessment and control of material risks across our operations.

Our 2020 Goals

In 2017, we set new key priorities within our Global Safety, Health & Environment Strategy that will guide our environment and sustainability journey. We have identified key priorities focusing on developing environmental knowledge and competence to drive sound environmental management, developing strategies and initiatives to reduce our energy and water consumption while maximising our recycling opportunities and undertaking a climate change risk assessment to better understand and plan for the impacts of climate change on our business.

Environmental Performance

We monitor and measure a range of environmental performance metrics including energy and water efficiency per tonne of throughput, scope 1* and 2** emissions and trade waste discharge per tonne of throughput. This information is available in our Sustainability Reports.


*Scope 1: Direct greenhouse gas emissions-Direct GHG emissions occur from sources that are owned or controlled by the company, for example, emissions from combustion in owned or controlled boilers, furnaces, vehicles, etc.; emissions from chemical production in owned or controlled process equipment.

**Scope 2: Indirect greenhouse gas emissions-Scope 2 accounts for GHG emissions from the generation of purchased electricity consumed by the company. Purchased electricity is defined as electricity that is purchased or otherwise brought into the organizational boundary of the company. Scope 2 emissions physically occur at the facility where electricity is generated.

Regulatory Environmental Reporting

We undertake a range of regulatory reporting as required by our environmental licences which can be located here.

Port Kembla Grain Terminal - GrainCorp has become aware that a calculation error has occurred in measuring the maximum emission rate of the fumigants, Methyl Bromide and Phosphine, during ventilation of silos at the Port Kembla Grain Terminal. This error means that the maximum emission rate limits contained in conditions L3.3 and L3.4 of EPL 3693 have been exceeded for Methyl Bromide and Phosphine. Due to the calculation error, the pollution monitoring data on GrainCorp’s website for ventilation events over the period 23 February 2016 – 31 December 2017 is incorrect.

Once the error became known, GrainCorp suspended ventilation operations and took steps to correct this error for all future calculations. The non-compliances have been notified to all relevant authorities including the NSW EPA.

Independent modelling by air quality experts shows that to date, all exceedances were within relevant air quality and health screening guidelines for ground level concentrations at our boundary.

GrainCorp is working with the EPA and is carrying out an internal investigation in relation to the incident. Once all relevant investigations are complete, corrected data for historical emissions will be provided on our website.

Carrington Grain Terminal: Pollution monitoring data results applicable to Carrington for the period from July 2016 to February 2018 were corrected on[1 March 2018], as GrainCorp became aware that the previously reported headings related to volumetric flow rate and maximum velocity contained an error. These headings should have referred to volumetric flow rate in m3/second, and maximum volumetric flow rate in m3/second. All other data contained within the reports was correct.
